Product Description

From the endocrinology experts at the Mayo Clinic comes an updated diabetes diet plan specifically designed to help prevent and manage prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. This adaptation of the #1 New York Times bestselling book, The Mayo Clinic Diet, provides those living with diabetes with a simple and straightforward guide to losing weight—and keeping it off.

Countless issues can thwart weight loss attempts—a sedentary lifestyle, struggles with cravings, limited time to plan healthy meals and exercise, and minimal support from family and friends. The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet provides solutions to these issues in the form of physician-approved meal plans, recipes for diabetics (that you’ll actually want to eat!), tips for increasing your physical activity, and tools to help you track your weight loss progress.

This book will also help you change your mindset around weight loss by teaching you five healthy habits for weight loss success, five habits to kick to help you transition into a healthy lifestyle, and five bonus habits to make the weight loss process as pain free as possible.

The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet follows the Mayo Clinic’s scientifically proven method for weight loss by following a two-step program. The first phase of the program, Lose It!, is a straightforward two-week plan that helps at-risk individuals lose weight quickly and safely, lowering the body’s overall blood sugar in the process. The second phase, Live It!, offers manageable lifestyle changes to help individuals lose one to two additional pounds a week until they reach their desired weight.

Additionally, the new second edition of this bestselling book now offers a bonus section packed with information about understanding calorie intake versus output, choosing healthy ingredients for a diabetic diet, finding healthy food (whether you’re in a restaurant or a grocery store), as well as helpful advice for pushing past weight loss plateaus.

Committing to a healthy lifestyle now can help avoid dangerous health complications later. When combined with The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet Journal, this all-encompassing guide from the weight-loss and nutrition experts at the Mayo Clinic will help you lose weight, live an improved lifestyle, and gain control of your diabetes, once and for all.

Filled with excellent advice (I suppose) but demands adherence to its philosophy, which is hard to do. I have not seen desired results so far but haven''t been able to execute all of its suggestions. Still, the book''s admonition to eat a large breakfast, exercise and eat more fruits and vegetables is a good one.

I purchased this book hoping to get accurate information about Type 2 diabetes and for a plan to lose weight and keep my glucose levels low. There was some background information, but so much of the book was repetetive. There are pages and pages of "you can do it." So much, that I was able to get through the book in less than an hour. I think most of this information regarding food and food choices can be found on line. I also find the claim of a quick start weight loss plan somewhat deceiving. There is no specific plan, just do''s and don''t such as "Don''t go out to eat. Exercise." I was so excited about the book that I started to underline and mark the points of interest, but quickly regretted it because I cannot return it. I''ve found much more help on the internet.

I was quite disappointed in this book as it appears to just be their Mayo Weight Loss book peppered with the words Diabetes and Diabetic. The only idea presented is that weight loss is the issue and very little discussion specific to glucose and insulin levels. I think Mayo should pull the book and have their best Diabetes specialists (Endocrinologists, Diabetic Nutritionists, and researchers) revise the book with a primary and clear focus on Diabetes. Weight loss, where applicable, should be a consideration but not the primary as many diabetics and pre-diabetics do not need or have the weight to lose.

To be fair, as a weight loss book this would get high marks but I bought it to address some elevated blood sugar issues and this is useless to me. Over the past 5 years I have largely used the methods outlined to lose 85 pounds so that part works but now that the weight is down and blood sugar is up where do I go? This book is purely weight loss centric and fails on diabetes.

Some notable nits:
1) Carbohydrates, Protein, and Fats are caloric types and not food groups. Think otherwise? Tell me where does a very well marbled steak fit, fat or protein? The number of calories can actually push some meat cuts into the fat category. Lets keep food groups, food groups. Vegetables, Meats, Dairy, Oils, Grains, and Legumes are food groups. Each of which has one or more caloric content and type. Additionally, these food groups can and probably should be broken down into finer partitions such as lean meats vs red meet. Does seafood get its own food group or is it meat? Bacon and butter are almost as fatty as oils but they are not. Cautions about high saturated fats in Meat and Dairy are very reasonable but does not make fat it''s own a food group.

2) While Glycemic Index may not play much to the weight loss issue it is quite important from a diabetic perspective. To downplay this due to limited diabetic nutritional knowledge shows how big a fail this book really is. Even considering that there is variation in understanding of real Glycemic Index values there is a big difference between different whole grains in terms of impact on blood sugar. This book emphasizes whole grains a lot but there are important differences in various whole grains for the diabetic diet that these folks do not seem to understand. Fruits have the same issue in that some fruits will drive blood glucose through the roof and others are much better. (i.e. Choose the strawberry and not the banana).

3) Blowing off Net Carbs because there is no FDA definition is patently absurd. Anyone who can read a food nutrition label and do grade school math can easily verify Net Carbs. <SARCASM>For the authors, who do not understand this, take total carbohydrates and subtract dietary fiber. You cannot digest dietary fiber so what is left over is Net Carbs. </SARCASM> This level of nutritional ignorance was a shocker.

4) The first 14 chapters were a bit lite-weight but I already knew about shifting to more fruits and vegetables, reducing calorie density from other sources, and becoming more active. After losing so much weight and finding I now have elevated glucose levels using exactly the diet they recommend, imagine my surprise. My best friend weighs almost 300 lbs with normal blood sugar levels. I needed a lot more focus on diabetes specifics, details on glucose levels, and the weight-loss portions could be more of a sidebar discussion.

Again, if I were looking at this book purely from a weight-loss perspective I would give it high marks but taking their weight-loss book and reselling as a diabetic diet book by peppering it with the words Diabetes and Diabetic is unethical and fraudulent. To be a true Diabetic Diet book they need a complete rewrite for every chapter with the entire emphasis on diabetes.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in late February. For several weeks I made dietary changes but my blood sugars were still over 130 in the mornings. I didn’t want to go on medicine to manage my diabetes. I needed more help so bought this book along with the journal. I have just completed my 10th week on the diet. Down 26 pounds in that time frame. I managed to lose 9 pounds from end of February till I started this diet on April 5th but was not getting good blood sugar control. Now My blood sugar is always within range (70-130) and my A1C has gone from 7.2 to 5.7. No meds needed so far. I also went from being sedentary to exercising 5 hours per week. I just followed the tips in the book and kept at it. If I can do it, I’m sure anyone can. Give it a try. Don’t forget the journal. It’s a lot to keep track of and I could never just do it my head.
